Designing Support That Fills The Gaps

A Vision Twenty Years in the Making

Some ideas arrive fully formed.

Others take shape slowly over time.

Nurture by Design® has always been the second kind.

While the name itself is relatively new, the ideas behind it has been developing for nearly twenty years—shaped by my experiences as a therapist, educator, mentor, program developer, and most importantly, by the privilege of walking alongside children and families during meaningful moments of growth.

Over the years, my vision for supporting families and clinicians has changed many times. It has evolved as I gained experience in clinics, schools, homes, community programs, and interdisciplinary teams. It has grown through opportunities to teach future therapists, support families beyond direct treatment sessions, and develop programs designed to better serve children and those who care for them.

And perhaps most importantly, it has adapted alongside changes in healthcare, education, and the way services are delivered.

The way families access services has changed.

The way therapists are trained has changed.

The needs of children, caregivers, and professionals continue to evolve.

Yet through all of those changes, one belief has remained remarkably consistent.

Children thrive when the people who support them feel equipped, connected, and confident.

That belief sits at the heart of Nurture by Design®.

Looking Beyond Traditional Therapy

Throughout my career, I often found myself asking the same questions:

What happens while families are waiting for services?

What happens between therapy sessions?

What happens when a family needs guidance now, but support is weeks or months away?

And what happens when clinicians want to provide excellent care but are navigating growing caseloads and increasing demands?

The answers were rarely simple, but they revealed something important.

Direct therapy can be life-changing, but meaningful support doesn't begin and end within a treatment session.

Sometimes families need practical tools they can use today.

Sometimes caregivers need help understanding what they are seeing and where to begin.

Sometimes clinicians need systems, resources, or additional guidance to help them feel more confident and sustainable in their work.

The more experience I gained, the more I realized that support can take many forms—and that there is value in creating resources and services that help bridge the gaps along the way.

Growing With Purpose

One of the greatest lessons my career has taught me is that growth and quality do not automatically go hand in hand.

Growth requires intention.

As Nurture by Design® continues to develop, maintaining quality remains one of my highest priorities.

That means continuing to learn, listening closely to families, paying attention to emerging needs, and creating resources thoughtfully rather than quickly.

It also means investing in newer clinicians.

Because supporting families and supporting clinicians are not separate goals.

They are deeply connected.

When clinicians feel supported, families benefit.

When families feel empowered, children benefit.

And when both are supported well, meaningful change becomes possible.

A Foundation Designed to Adapt

One reason this vision has taken so many years to build is that I never wanted to create something fixed. I wanted to create something that could continue learning and adapting alongside the families and professionals it serves.

I also wanted to help bridge the gap between therapy recommendations and everyday life—because meaningful progress happens most often in the moments between appointments, within routines, relationships, and daily experiences.

Because of this, Nurture by Design has been built with the following in mind:

Relationships first.

Developmental understanding.

Meaningful participation.

Thoughtful design.

Practical support for real life.

These principles continue to guide every resource, service, and future idea taking shape behind the scenes.

Some opportunities that once felt distant are beginning to feel possible. Others are still being refined. Many have evolved into something quite different from what I originally imagined years ago.

It feels like growth.

And perhaps that is exactly how it should be.

The best ideas are often shaped by experience and fulfilling a real need.

Looking Ahead With Gratitude

As summer begins, I find myself reflecting on how grateful I am for the many children, families, colleagues, mentors, and students who have influenced this journey.

I am also deeply grateful for my husband, Darren, whose encouragement and belief in this vision helped make this next chapter possible. Building something meaningful often requires faith before the path is fully visible, along with years of patience, learning, and persistence. I am thankful we have been able to pursue a future that feels more aligned with our family's values while remaining deeply supportive to the children and families I enjoy serving.

Nurture by Design® is not simply a business.

It is the result of years of learning, observing, adapting, and believing that support can be both compassionate and practical.

There is still much to build.

There is still much to learn.

But for the first time, what was once a long-held vision is beginning to feel tangible.

And while there is more to come, I am excited to continue sharing the journey with you.
